Rugby League centenary in Cessnock
Rugby League in Cessnock will celebrate its centenary on Saturday night with a dinner and official proceedings at Cessnock Supporters Club.
In what will be a night packed with highlights, two teams of the century will be named and coaches and all those who have played a significant role in development of the sport will be honoured.
Former broadcaster Leigh Maughan will compare the evening with more that 400 booked in for this memorable occasion.
As a curtain raiser to the big night, one of the sport's best-known stalwarts, Phil Baird, will launch his book The Goannas Legend at Cessnock Supporters Club on Friday at 11am. The book has been a two-year labour of love, tracing the highs and lows and putting on record forever all those remarkable achievements by the black and gold.
The Advertiser has put together special tribute to Cessnock Rugby League which starts on page 33 of today's edition (see attached documents). It contains photos of the old days and loads of human interest on players through the ages. We also asked some well-knowns to tell about their Golden Goey Moment.
We list all the coaches and life members and make a special mention of the defining 1972 season and Supporters Club that followed this euphoria.
